Breaking Curses

Curses and blessings are not purely natural, but vehicles of supernatural power that can have either positive or negative effects on our lives, often transmitted through words or physical objects.

Generational Curses

While we can't be blamed for the mistakes our ancestors made, we may find ourselves influenced by certain sins because of their past actions. These sins can lead to challenges—physically, emotionally, or spiritually—in our present family life, known as generational curses.

The good news is that Jesus Christ can redeem us from these curses (Galatians 3:13-14) and break the influence of ancestral sins. This prayer is a way to bring the redemptive power of Jesus into your family's story. As you pray, focus on anything specific to your family line, and trust in the transformative grace of Jesus.

How can generational curses be broken? Generational curses can be broken through prayer, obedience to God, adjusting relationships, and understanding the authority given to believers.

Actively Imposed Curses

A curse is a manifestation of supernatural evil directed at an individual, group, place, or object. It inflicts harm or misfortune and may be conveyed through words, rituals, or symbols.

  • Verbal Curses: Uttering specific words or phrases with the intention of causing harm.

  • Rituals and Ceremonies: Engaging in specific rituals or ceremonies designed to invoke negative spiritual forces.

  • Symbols and Objects: Using symbols, objects, or talismans to carry demonic influence.

  • Magical Practices: Employing magical practices or spells to direct demonic forces towards the target.

  • Enchantments or Incantations: Using spoken or written charms or spells to invoke a curse.

What are the signs of being under a curse? Signs of being under a curse include mental/emotional breakdown, repeated/chronic sicknesses, financial insufficiency, and being accident prone.

Evidence in Scripture

The basis of all deliverance from a curse is the sacrificial atonement of Jesus. This is stated very clearly in Galatians 3:13–14—the key verse for this whole theme.

“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus...” (NKJ)

There’s the transition from curse to blessing that’s made possible because on the cross Jesus was made a curse with the curse due to us that we might in return receive the blessing due to His sinless obedience. This is stated very generally in Isaiah 53:6:

“All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him [Jesus] the iniquity of us all.” (NKJ)

Where the word “iniquity” means not only rebellion but all the evil consequences of rebellion and one of those evil consequences is the curse that comes from not hearing and not obeying God’s voice.
